Svetlana & Rob were married on a drizzly and foggy day at the Chanticleer with their reception following at the Siasconset Casino.
Their love story and proposal are best said in Rob’s own words :
‘June 2013, my then girlfriend of 4 months and I decided to take a trip to Nantucket. Having lived in Massachusetts for the past 6 years thorough medical residency, and in my practice on the South Shore, I never had the opportunity nor reason to venture over to the little island south east of Martha’s Vineyard. On her recommendation, however we planned the long weekend trip. Being an avid cyclist, and through my research I discovered a nice 15mi or so loop that would afford some of the best views of the island and would serve as a great backdrop to get to know more about one another. I proposed the idea, only to hear of a cautious “yes”.
The day started smoothly enough, picking out the right bike, helmet, water bottle. Admittedly I was a bit thrown off by her not wanting to test out the bike for proper fit. What should have been a red flag, I took to be a signal of playful banter when she asked “how do you get on one of these again?”. What I hadn’t known at the time was that my now fiancée (update – WIFE!) had never ridden a bicycle before! She did soldier on, with more than her fair share of falls, scrapes. What initially looked to be a disaster in the making, turned out to be one our most memorable trips, punctuated to our first venture out to Sankaty Head Light. We walked up to the monument, heard about its history, the epic move away from the eroding coastline (which at the time was set to claim an old swing-set, once owned by the stewards of the lighthouse). Needless to say, we were enthralled.
Fast forward three years, Svetlana and I have had the privilege of going on multiple adventures, from avoiding grizzlies in Alaska, hiking 20+miles through hail as a part of the Inca trail in Peru, and cozying up to Bengal Tigers in Thailand. On December 12, 2015, Svetlana made me the happiest man this side of reason by accepting my proposal for marriage in the middle of Central Park. In addition to planning a wedding for the fall, we have signed up for the Pan-Mass Challenge, a ~200mi charity bike ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown, raising money for the Jimmy Fund. Imagine that, from not knowing how to ride a bike, to participating in a 200mi ride across Massachusetts for charity! In training we have made several trips to Nantucket, taking in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of everything the Island has to offer, making the 15mi loop a part of our regular training. At all times, taking a minute or two to stop and admire at the light house and its beautiful surroundings.’
Needless to say, the couple did not let a little rain and fog slow them down, instead they embraced the weather had no problem walking around in the wind and fog for a few photos! Svetlana and Rob performed a very well executed first dance together to the music of East Coast Soul before opening the dance floor for their closest friends and family to join them.
