+ MORE

Zofia's professional photography career started when a friend took a chance on her straight out of high school in the fall of 1996. For the next few years she hopped around ski resorts, snowboarding as much as possible and picking up photography clients in the summers. Her first Nantucket wedding was in 2001, and she has been based year-round on island since her oldest daughter was born 4 years later.

The Co. in Zofia & Co. formed in 2010, when work got too busy and she expanded the company to include a small team of awesome photographers.

We enjoy becoming friends with our wedding couples and seeing them come back with their families year after year for portrait sessions.

WE ARE A TEAM OF

Maintaining Lasting relationships with those who trust us means

There is nothing more satisfying than knowing we have worked our tails off in order to make someone super happy. We do our very best for each and every one of our portrait and wedding clients, and we simply love hearing about how much they enjoyed working with us.

It's true what they say, "Find something you love to do, and you'll never work a day in your life." It's work (don't get us wrong) but it's so very rewarding.

It all began with an initial meeting for Tim and Santi's wedding in 2011, during which Tim said, "We not only want to hire you for our wedding, but we feel like we're going to end up best friends." And boy, was he right.

Along with our dear friends, former grooms, and fellow wedding vendors, David and Donald of Handy & Dallaire Events and The Event Rental Co, the 5 of us have become like family, traveled around the world together, and been there for each other through thick and thin.

When I say I care about my clients and our relationship, this is what I'm talking about.

OWNER/LEAD PHOTOGRAPHER

Photography is not my side hustle or something I picked up as a mom, it’s been my whole world since I was a teenager. Aside from a brief stint as a ski/snowboard bum in Killington, Mammoth and Aspen (who could blame me?!), it’s the only profession I have ever known.

My very transient upbringing, and subsequent introverted personality, caused me to be a people watcher from afar. I'm always scanning a scene, seeing things that perhaps those actually engaged in conversations don't notice.

I am currently the co-president of the Nantucket Photographers Network (formerly known as PAN).

Photographing people is my life long career.

A little Q&A

We moved nearly every year of my childhood, and beyond. I'd lived in 3 countries and spoke 3 languages by the time I was 5 years old. We're very lucky that my father is a great photo documentarian, otherwise I don't think I'd remember much of anything. There were just too many places and faces to stick to memory.

We're also incredibly fortunate that my family's photos were not ruined during the World Wars in Poland, so we have an amazing library of printed photographs going back to my three times great grandmother. These photographs from before my own life, and of it, are so precious to me.

At every family session, every engagement, every event and wedding that I photograph, I am taking responsibility of chronicling these moments in your life. I take this task to heart because I know just how important these images will be to future generations.

01. What is your why?

It's so funny how many people ask if Zofia is a made up business name. It's my actual first name! :)

You can also call me Z, Zo, or Zoe.

I was born in Poland to a kick ass hippie mother. Zofia is the Polish version of Sophia and it was popular maybe 100 years ago, so I was always the only one around.

Fun fact! In 2022, Zofia became the #1 baby girl name in Poland. Bringing back a classic!

02. What's the story behind your name?

I learned black and white photography in the darkroom at 13 in junior high. I photographed my first wedding straight out of high school, the same year the first flip phone was introduced (oof).

I never saw photography as the cool, trendy thing to do as it’s become now through the internet and social media. It was an art I really enjoyed, but it was still pretty nerdy.

I started in photography when photographing weddings was seriously UNCOOL.

I had one 9-5 desk job. I lasted 10 days.

After working in a photo lab as the darkroom manager, straight out of high school, I started picking up portrait work through store clients, then photographed by first wedding for a friend at 18 years old. From there, I photographed skiing and snowboarding in Killington, Mammoth and Aspen. After many years of the transient life, I landed full-time on Nantucket where weddings and family portraits became my sole focus. No pun intended. ;)

03. How did you get into photography?

I remember when photographers were primarily safari vest wearing men, and we were posing the bride with bouquets around her gown's train (IYKYK). I was lucky to find my place as a very young woman in a very predominately male profession.

I went from using film for 9 years, then switching to digital, and that changed everything. I’m thankful that social media has upped everyone’s game. One thing that's sadden me over the years, is that fewer people care about the printed photograph. I'm grateful that my clients still do.

I’ve evolved with the times, but what hasn’t changed has been my goal, vision and purpose for photographing people, moments and landscapes.

04. how have you seen the photography industry change over your years in business?

Nantucket is grey, windy and QUIET in the off season, and I ADORE it. My three daughters keep me super busy year round, but I actually get to spend quality time with them during the winter.

In a former life I was a snowboard photographer in Killington, Mammoth and Aspen. I trade my snowboard for a paddle board in the summer. I’m also really into reading, great tv, and cooking. The off season on Nantucket is pretty special, it's our time to unwind. Best kept secret? Nantucket's sunsets are WILD in the winter!

Winter is also when I have time to shoot for myself, mostly with my old film cameras. I travel as much as I can to places like Greece, Iceland, Montreal, and any mountain with snow on it, and attend as many concerts as possible!

But truthfully, I never really stop working. As a business owner, there is always something to do to keep growing and learning.

05. How do you spend your time in the off season?

I used to think a big city was for me. There was a time in high school that I dreamed of moving to NYC or Paris and becoming a fashion photographer or mens clothing designer. But I have found peace here in 'Pleasantville'.

Being surrounded by the quiet ocean gives me perspective and grounds me.

The beauty of our island landscape and the history makes my heart sing. The community, the friendships I have here, the serenity...

I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else with my girls.

06. what do you love most about island life?

"We have worked side by side with Zofia & Co on lots of weddings since we starting filming in 2014. It is always a great experience.

Kind words from a fellow wedding vendor

Laura & Chris

Her work is stunning and her energy on the day of a wedding makes everyone feel relaxed.

When are together, we work as team to ensure the couple is getting the best experience & outcome. Never underestimate the value in all your vendors working together as a team, it is key.

We highly recommend hiring Zofia & Co to capture the most important day of your families history, you will stunning images to look on and enjoy for your the rest of your life & for generations after you. Every couple we have worked with is always so happy they did. 10/10"

Becky

Becky Holdgate Zadroga was born and raised on Nantucket, and is a lover of boating, fishing, trips to Tuckernuck and travel.

She's been photographing weddings, events and portraits as a lead and second photographer since 2013, and joined our team in 2016. The natural and organic vibe of her photography is a great complement to our style. That vibe is clearly rooted in her love of the sea and the outdoors.

Becky considers her Island upbringing a gift. Time with family was often spent summering on a smaller island off Nantucket named Muskeget, where she learned boating and fishing skills and how to live off the bounty of the ocean. Now married and with a family of her own, Becky and husband Jerry are carrying on the family traditions with their two teenagers. Summertime for the Zadrogas is synonymous with weekend excursions boating to nearby Tuckernuck Island and camping there with friends.

Kristen

Kristen called the west coast home for the first 20+ years of her life. But even as a young desert girl in Scottsdale, Arizona, and all through college in Southern California, she heard and couldn't resist the east coast calling. After six years working as an NYC lawyer at a big international firm, Kristen's heart yearned for something different, so she leapt from the corporate world to a job that allowed her enough time to explore her passion for photography.

She launched her own photography business in New York in 2017. A few months later, life unexpectedly brought Kristen, her husband Tim, and their golden retriever Hudson to Boston. They now happily split their time between Boston and Nantucket. Tim’s family has a long history on the island. Tim and his siblings have worked everywhere from Juice Guys to Eye of the Needle to the Marine & Shellfish Department, protecting the island’s piping plovers.

Kristen’s favorite part of the island is the conservation land, including the many trails where she and Tim take long walks with Hudson and look for birds (while Hudson sniffs all the sniffs).

Charity Grace

Charity Grace joined Zofia & Co. at the start of the 2022 wedding season as a photography assistant. She's an amazing addition to our team with her cool and collected vibe which puts everyone at ease.

The off-season (or "potluck" season) is Charity Grace's favorite time on the island. It's when many islanders have more space to connect with each other and truly enjoy the serenity of the Grey Lady by playing music and sharing meals.

Her landscape photos are featured the Nantucket Current's This Week in Review. Astrophotography is a particularly unique passion for Charity Grace!

We're super pumped to have her accompany us to weddings as an associate photographer when she's not out chasing the Milky Way.

Taylor

Office & Photography assistant

We are so lucky to have Taylor on board since 2015 as our studio manager. She's fielding phone calls and email inquiries, editing photos, designing albums, and perking up little kids at portrait sessions.

When not working as the backbone for the Co. she teaches kindergarten at the Nantucket Elementary School, walks her dog, listens to crime podcasts, makes amazing air fryer donuts. and is planning her own wedding.

This summer, Taylor will be a Zofia & Co. bride!
